From the Desk of the Editor

Sincerely,

You'd think I'd have learned by now. Save at minimum every ten minutes. At minimum. But, I was burning the midnight oil, and the two a.m. oil, and even the oil alotted for probably later. And I went to bed. And that night, of all nights, some update installs that restarts my computer, and I woke up, looked at my computer (the first thing I do every morning), and started swearing. Luckily, I did save some of it, but my letter from the editor wasn't one of those things. And while I love writing, I loathe rewriting. Just let me find a good .html editor for Linux. You just wait...

Before I start ranting about how it really bothers me that some operating systems can restart my computer without my consent, allow me to change the subject with absolutely no segue.

This is the invitational editor issue of Susurrus. The turnout was great, and we wish we could have published all of the stories we received. Plenty of people lament about the state of the fiction market, and it's true that it's hard to make a living as a writer. Fortunately, plenty of people are still trying, and plenty of others are publishing great fiction (albeit people with less money). To highlight some of these publishers, we invited twenty-four of our favorite magazines and independent publishers to submit fiction. Some you've probably heard of, some maybe not, but we've decided that all of these are staffed by people who know what they're doing. We've put links to everyone we invited on the left of the main page. After you read our stories, we invite you to check them out.

Something interesting: We got a lot of flash fiction from editors. I wondered what this meant for all of about two seconds before I realized that editors probably write flash because they're so busy. I know that between audiocasts for I Am This Meat (which are still coming, just very slowly), this issue, and the real world, I put off my own personal NaNoWriMo until January.

And speaking of audiocasts, this issue will mark the (late) debut of our RSS feed for the audio versions of Susurrus, 8pod. Stories should appear approximately weekly until we've got them all up. During the downtime between issues, we'll have a sort of "best of" Susurrus and Atomjack.

Also, make sure you check out the reviews in this issue: Bust Down the Door and Eat All the Chickens, an absurdist journal, and Tabloid Purposes IV, a horror anthology.

Susurrus is going places these days, and we're glad to have you along. We're expanding in leaps and bounds, and I'm just barely keeping up. I'm running late, and I have dozens of things that require my immediate attention, and I'm having a great time.

Finally, I'd like to introduce our new additions to the Susurrus Press editorial staff: Staci Leech, Kendra Sims, Nathan McKnight, and Scott Gabriel. They've been helping Adicus at Atomjack and me here at Susurrus, and it's amazing how much easier they're making things. Now, you have fiction to read. I am fine. How are you?

Dear Reader,

Rev. Brian Worley
